PACO Study

Placenta Antibodies Children’s Outcomes (PACO)

Investigators: Lisa Bebell and Josesp Ngonzi

Background: Successful mother to child HIV transmission prevention programs have significantly decreased the global incidence of congenital HIV yet, > 1 million HIV -exposed uninfected HEU) children born annually in sub-Saharan Africa, these children have poorer early life outcomes than HIV unexposed infants, including a4 fold increase in mortality elevated risk of severe infections, growth stunting and poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes million HIV-exposed, uninfected (HEU) children are born annually in sub-Saharan Africa. These children have poorer early life.

Objectives/aims

  • Compare the prevalence of composite outcome of one or more inflammatory placental abnormalities by Maternal HIV serostatus and PREP use.
  • Determine the correlates of inflammatory placental abnormalities among WLWH.
  • Determine whether the placenta acts as a mediator of the association between maternal HIV infection and infant hospitalization or death or quantity of transplacental. Determine whether the placenta acts as a mediator of the association between maternal HIV infection and 1) infant hospitalization or death, or 2) quantity of transplacental.
  • To define the burden of sensorineural hearing loss in neonates and infants.
